iOS 27 Battery Drain: The Apple-Recommended Setting to Try First
iPhone battery draining fast on iOS 27? Apple itself suggests switching off Background App Refresh. Here's how, plus 7 more fixes that work.
If your iPhone battery has been dropping faster since you updated to iOS 27, you're far from alone. Complaints have been piling up since the release in mid-September, on models as different as the iPhone Air and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The good news is that Apple already publishes a simple fix, and it takes about ten seconds.
Quick answer
Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and switch it to Off (or Wi-Fi if you want a compromise). Apple lists this setting in its own battery-saving tips. Combine it with a restart and a few days of patience, and most iOS 27 battery problems fade.
What is Background App Refresh?
Background App Refresh lets apps fetch new content while you're not using them. Your weather app grabs the latest forecast, social apps download new posts, and your phone does all of it while sitting on your desk. That convenience costs energy, even with the screen off.
The setting has three modes:
- Off: disables the feature for the whole phone
- Wi-Fi: refreshes only on Wi-Fi, which saves mobile data but still uses power
- Wi-Fi & Cellular Data: refreshes anywhere
You can also control it app by app from the same screen. Apps keep working when refresh is off. They simply update when you open them.
What does Apple say?
Apple's battery guidance tells users who want better battery life to turn off Background App Refresh, either completely or by choosing Wi-Fi only. Apple's "Maximizing Battery Life" page also recommends checking Settings > Battery to see which apps are using power in the background, and limiting location access for apps that don't need it.
Low Power Mode already does part of this work. It pauses background downloads and mail fetching until you charge the phone again. If you want an automatic version of the same idea, our guide to your iPhone's firmware and devices is a good place to check which iOS versions your model supports.
Note: neither Apple nor the guides we reviewed give an exact figure for how much battery you'll save. Results depend on how many apps you have and how you use them.
Why is iOS 27 draining batteries in the first place?
Not all of the drain comes from Background App Refresh. Several things happen at once after a major update:
- Post-update housekeeping. After installing iOS 27, your iPhone rebuilds search indexes, refreshes apps, downloads system assets and prepares data for Siri and other AI features, according to TechSpot.
- A heavier load than usual. Large photo libraries and more AI-related data can stretch this work out.
- Timing. Drain is usually most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours, and can last two or three days on some phones.
- Possible network behavior. One guide points to Connectivity Assist, which replaces Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 27 and can keep the cellular connection active alongside Wi-Fi. Apple hasn't acknowledged a battery problem tied to it, so treat this as a thing to test rather than a confirmed cause.
- Apps not yet updated. Developers often ship optimization updates shortly after a new iOS version arrives.
8 ways to fix iOS 27 battery drain
1. Turn off Background App Refresh. The step above. Start with social media apps and keep it on only for apps where you genuinely need live updates, like navigation.
2. Leave the phone plugged in overnight on Wi-Fi. This lets iOS finish its post-update tasks while charging, which is the quickest way to get past the temporary drain.
3. Restart your iPhone once. A simple reboot can clear stuck background processes.
4. Update your apps. Open the App Store and install pending updates, since outdated apps can misbehave on a new iOS version.
5. Check Settings > Battery. Look for apps showing heavy background activity and deal with them individually.
6. Review Location Services. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and set apps that don't need constant tracking to "While Using" or "Never." Location is one of the biggest hidden battery drains.
7. Install the newest iOS 27 update. Apple is already testing iOS 27.2. See what's new in iOS 27.2 beta before deciding whether to try it, and browse all iOS beta builds if you're a tester.
8. Try Low Power Mode. It disables several battery-hungry features until you recharge to around 80%.
Don't bother force-quitting apps
Apple says that swiping apps away in the app switcher doesn't improve battery life or performance. Suspended apps use no meaningful resources. Skip this habit and save yourself the effort.
When should you worry?
If the drain is still severe after about a week, the update probably isn't the culprit. At that point an individual app, a location setting or the battery's own condition is more likely to blame. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health and consider a service check if capacity is low.
Can you go back to iOS 26?
Technically yes, but only while Apple is still signing the older version. Use our Signing Status tool to check which iOS 26 builds are still signed for your device, and Firmware by Version to find the right file. Back up first, and remember that downgrading is a last resort for a problem that usually fixes itself. Planning to upgrade your hardware?
If battery life is a recurring headache, newer iPhones may help. See our iPhone 18 Pro Max specs and release guide or compare models on our Device Specs page.
FAQ
Does turning off Background App Refresh break my apps?
No. Apps work normally and just refresh when you open them. You may see slightly older content for a moment, and notifications are handled separately.
How long does iOS 27 battery drain last?
Most reports put it at 24 to 48 hours, occasionally up to three days.
Is iOS 27 battery drain a bug?
Much of it is expected post-update processing. Apple has not announced a confirmed battery bug.
Should I choose Off or Wi-Fi?
Off saves the most power. Wi-Fi is a middle ground that also protects your mobile data plan.
Does Low Power Mode turn off Background App Refresh?
Yes, it pauses background refresh and other automatic tasks until the battery recovers.
