Apple WWDC 2026 Keynote Recap: Every Major Announcement

News

Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote marked a massive shift for the company, headlined by the transformation of its virtual assistant into Siri AI, major ecosystem-wide Apple Intelligence upgrades, the introduction of macOS 27 Golden Gate, and a farewell message from outgoing CEO Tim Cook.

Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote has come and gone, and it delivered one of the most consequential software previews in the company's history. Over roughly 90 minutes at Apple Park on June 8, 2026, Apple unveiled a completely rebuilt Siri powered by Google's Gemini AI, the next generation of all its operating systems, sweeping AI integrations across core apps, and a suite of long-overdue quality-of-life features. Here is everything announced — broken down, explained, and timed to the official Apple keynote video.

The Big Picture: A Deliberate Refinement Year Built Around AI

WWDC 2026 was a deliberate "refinement year" built around a rebuilt, AI-powered Siri, which is free with a daily allowance, charges extra through iCloud+, and is not launching in the EU at first. Around it sits macOS Golden Gate marking the official end of Intel Macs, a no-drops device list that keeps the iPhone 11 alive on iOS 27, and a deep bench of Apple Intelligence features spread across Messages, Safari, Shortcuts, Passwords, and more. It all lands this fall.

It was also a historically significant event for another reason. This is Tim Cook's last WWDC as Apple CEO before he steps down and cedes the role to John Ternus, the company's senior vice president of hardware engineering, on September 1. WWDC 2026 is, in effect, the beginning of the Ternus era.

Platform Foundations and Design (Keynote: 5:55 – 16:43)

Liquid Glass Gets an Opacity Slider

Apple opened the software portion of the keynote with refinements to the Liquid Glass design language introduced last year in iOS 26. The biggest change: a full opacity slider that lets users dial Liquid Glass anywhere from completely transparent to fully tinted. This directly addresses the most common complaint about the 2025 redesign — that the translucency was too aggressive and hurt readability.

30% Faster App Launch Speeds

On the performance side, Apple announced app launch speeds are up to 30% faster across iOS 27. Beyond app launch, Apple completely rearchitected the search infrastructure underpinning Spotlight, Photos, and Mail, delivering significantly faster and more relevant results across all three. These are foundational improvements that will benefit every user regardless of whether they use AI features.

New Features in Core Apps

The platform foundations section also covered several quality-of-life improvements to built-in apps:

  • Photos now supports full-resolution iCloud shared albums with external contributors — meaning people outside your iCloud family or contact list can contribute full-quality images to a shared album, not compressed versions.
  • Health includes dedicated cycle tracking for perimenopause and menopause, a long-requested addition that fills a meaningful gap in Apple's women's health suite.
  • Maps features a significantly boosted Flyover mode with more detailed and immersive 3D city coverage.

macOS 27: Golden Gate

Apple officially named macOS 27 Golden Gate, and it marks a clean break from the Intel era — this is the first version of macOS that requires Apple Silicon. Design changes on Mac mirror iOS: a more uniform toolbar across apps, sidebars that stretch to the edges of the screen to minimise distractions, tighter corner radii on all windows, and a full refresh of app icons. Visual Intelligence — the camera-powered feature that identifies and acts on real-world objects — finally makes its way to macOS, with intelligent file name suggestions joining the feature set.

Child Trust and Safety (Keynote: 17:00 – 27:50)

Apple dedicated a substantial 10-minute section of the keynote to child safety — a reflection of the increasing pressure governments worldwide are placing on tech companies regarding minors and screen time.

Age-Appropriate Setup Assistants

New Setup Assistants guide parents through age-appropriate device configuration from the moment a child first turns on a device. Rather than leaving parents to hunt through settings menus, the assistant walks them through every relevant restriction at setup time.

Child Accounts: Mandatory Under 13, Optional to 18

Child accounts are mandatory for users under 13 and can remain in place until the age of 18. Apple says a child account "enables safeguards across the system, tailored to the child's age." Parents can determine exactly who their children can call, FaceTime, and message, and control which apps and websites are accessible. Children can request access to a blocked website in Safari or request to download a restricted app — both go to parents for approval.

Time Allowances by App Category

iOS 27 introduces Time Allowances for specific app categories, giving parents more nuanced control than a single daily screen-time cap. A child could have two hours for games but unlimited time for educational apps, for example — all managed from a redesigned Screen Time dashboard.

Communication Safety: Now Detects Gore and Violent Content

Communication Safety — previously focused on detecting nudity in images — now extends to gore and violent content. The feature uses on-device machine learning to identify sensitive content before it's seen, without sending images to Apple's servers.

By default, features like Ask to Browse (limiting web access) and Ask to Buy (purchases) are turned on automatically for children under 13. Apple will also surface helpful suggestions on how restrictions should evolve as children get older.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI (Keynote: 28:00 – 1:07:45)

The longest and most densely packed section of the keynote — nearly 40 minutes — was dedicated to Apple Intelligence and its crown jewel: Siri AI.

Siri AI: A Ground-Up Rebuild

The headline announcement of the entire keynote was Siri AI, and for the first time in years, Apple showed a working product rather than a roadmap slide. Apple rebuilt the assistant from the ground up on a new architecture — not a patch on the old Siri, but a full replacement.

Architecture: On-Device + Private Cloud Compute

Siri AI uses a hybrid processing model: simpler requests run entirely on-device using Apple's on-device Neural Engine, while more complex requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute — Apple's server infrastructure designed so that even Apple cannot read user data being processed. This means the privacy architecture that Apple has built its reputation on extends to the cloud, not just the device.

Conversational and Contextually Aware

The new Siri handles multi-step requests, understands personal context across apps, and allows for natural follow-up questions within a conversation. Ask it to surface a hotel confirmation from an old email, pull up photos from a specific trip, or add a product to a list after seeing it on a webpage — it can do all of this without you re-explaining context between requests. On iOS 27, swiping down from the middle of the screen launches the Siri AI interface, joining "Hey Siri" and the side button as activation methods. Responses appear in cards, and the conversation continues inline.

On macOS, Siri drops the floating orb entirely and appears as a contextual in-app assistant — an "Edit with Siri" panel in Pages was demonstrated live on stage.

Visual Intelligence

Siri AI's Visual Intelligence capability lets you point your camera at an object, a screenshot, or anything on screen and act on it immediately. Identify a plant, look up a product, get information on a landmark, or have Siri take action based on what it sees — all without leaving the current app. Visual Intelligence is now available on macOS for the first time.

Writing Tools: Systemwide

Writing Tools are now integrated system-wide, available in any text field across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The tools cover proofreading, full draft generation from a prompt, and tone adjustment — shifting a message from casual to professional or vice versa. This is not limited to first-party Apple apps; any app that uses standard text fields gets Writing Tools automatically.

Deep App Integration

Beyond the assistant itself, Apple Intelligence is woven throughout the core app suite:

  • Safari can organise your open tabs into topic-based groups automatically, notify you of changes to pages (price drops, restocks, policy changes), and build custom browser extensions from a plain-language description.
  • Passwords can now automatically fix weak or breached logins — navigating to the site, signing in, and swapping in a strong replacement password with a single tap.
  • Shortcuts gains natural language automation, meaning you can describe what you want to automate in plain English instead of building a workflow manually.
  • Photos gains AI-powered Spatial Reframing and a Cleanup tool for removing unwanted objects from images.

The Gemini Partnership

The next generation of Apple Intelligence runs on Apple Foundation Models custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. Bloomberg reported before WWDC that the arrangement is expected to cost Apple roughly $1 billion a year. Apple has not confirmed a figure. Even the hidden watermark Apple applies to AI-generated images is Google's SynthID — baked in at the moment of creation so AI-touched files can be identified down the line.

Siri AI Pricing

Siri AI is free with a daily usage allowance. Heavier usage is gated behind iCloud+ subscription tiers.

Which Devices Get the Full Siri AI Experience?

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require an iPhone 16 model or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. iOS 27 itself installs on phones going back to the iPhone 11 — so many users will get the update without the AI features.

The most advanced Siri AI capabilities — expressive customizable voices and a major jump in dictation accuracy — require iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, or iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPads with M4 or later, Macs with M3 or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and M5 Apple Vision Pro.

Siri AI Is Blocked in the EU and China

Siri AI will not ship on iPhone or iPad in the European Union with the release of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, with no current timeline to change that. Apple blames the Digital Markets Act, arguing that complying with its requirements would force it to give third-party assistants the same deep system access Siri gets — a security risk it says it cannot accept. Apple proposed a Trusted System Agent workaround and an 18-month phased rollout; both were rejected by the European Commission.

EU users will still get Siri AI on Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Siri AI is also unavailable in China at launch. It launches in English first, with more languages to follow.

AirPods Custom EQ and GymKit Heart Rate

After nearly a decade of user requests, AirPods owners are getting a true custom equaliser in iOS 27 — a graph-style interface with low, mid, and high bands and a live waveform so you can see and hear your adjustments in real time. AirPods Pro 3 also gains the ability to sync your heart rate to iPhone via GymKit during workouts.

Image Playground: Photorealistic Mode + SynthID Watermarks

Image Playground can now generate photorealistic images, not just cartoon-style art, using a model running on Private Cloud Compute. You can edit by describing a change or by tapping, circling, or brushing an object. All generated images carry a SynthID watermark.

Developer Tools (Keynote: 1:09:42 – 1:12:00)

Foundation Models Framework

Apple introduced a new Foundation Models framework that lets developers run local AI models directly on Apple Silicon, inside their apps, without sending any data to the cloud. This opens on-device AI capabilities — previously limited to Apple's own apps — to the entire developer ecosystem.

Device Hub in Xcode 27

Xcode 27 gains an all-new Device Hub for managing and testing across Apple devices, significantly streamlining the process of running and debugging apps on physical hardware. Xcode 27 also integrates coding agents from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, allowing developers to work with Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT-powered assistance directly inside the IDE.

watchOS 27, visionOS 27, tvOS 27

Siri AI is available on watchOS, visionOS, and CarPlay. watchOS 27 brings health and fitness enhancements alongside the rebuilt assistant. visionOS 27 demonstrates Siri AI in spatial computing contexts with a redesigned Control Center. tvOS 27 received a quieter update focused on smart home integration and Home app compatibility.

What Was NOT Announced

  • No HomePad — the rumoured smart display did not appear.
  • No Apple Fold — the foldable iPhone remains unconfirmed.
  • No CarPlay overhaul — mentioned as a Siri AI surface but given no dedicated segment.

The Bigger Story: Apple's Philosophical Shift on AI

WWDC 2026 marks a genuine turning point. For years Apple's advantage was self-containment: its own silicon, its own OS, its own on-device AI. That story is now more complicated. Google Gemini powers the assistant. Google's SynthID watermarks the images. Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT are inside Xcode. And Private Cloud Compute — while genuinely privacy-preserving — means Siri is no longer purely on-device.

Whether this pragmatism pays off for consumers depends entirely on whether Siri AI, when it ships in beta later this year, lives up to the demos. Apple has promised a smarter Siri before. This time, with a billion-dollar partnership and a rebuilt architecture, the stakes could not be higher.
